Teaching Guidelines 2015
We strongly encourage people living with disabilities and mental illness to apply to work with us to present our programs. As tutors you are consider to be either self-employed or an artists working as a hobbyist. We recommend, before you tender and expression of interest to us, you check with the ATO about your taxation requirements. We also encourage you to take out your own public liability insurance for the term of your working with us.

At ArtISability we ask our tutors to play a dual role in our program. Our program focuses on both the artistic skills develop of an artists and developing the skills and support networks the need to develop their individual art practice. Thus is addition to providing tuition to artists we recognized tutors play a vital role as mentors.

- Confirmation of teaching dates or key dates for mentoring.
- Appropriate time tables and training dates.
- In 2015 compulsory disability awareness training will be required to be completed by all staff. You can attend this FREE of charge on 29th November, 2014 at 9:30 otherwise you will be notify or session times available in February 2015.
- All staff meetings are compulsory and medical evidence for not attendance will be requested. You are not paid to attend staff meetings, where possible these will be held prior or following workshops on your day of teaching, where this is not feasible expenses will be reimbursed.
- Confirmation of quotes will be requested. Once agreements are signed amendments will not be accepted. You may elect not to sign agreements for any reason, including changes in personal circumstances or request a meeting to clarify terms or requests amendments, reasonable amendments will always be agreed upon.

As
a professional program it is requested all applicants have prior artistic
knowledge or can demonstrate self-taught skills to enter the program of intermediated
level. Artists should be able to demonstrate knowledge of a colour chart, principles
of light and shading, and basic knowledge of the artists’ tools.
Tutoring vs Mentoring
In
2015 we ask that tutor focus on skills development rather than working towards
production of profession work to hang on the wall. Our program aims to build a foundation for
our artists. We found where artists lack basic foundation they struggle to make
links.
Thus
artists will have the opportunity to build skills during workshops and then
work on individual projects with their mentors after lunch depending on their
energy levels. Where artists can only cope with a half day program they will be
offered mentoring after the completion of the foundation stones program.
Good
tuition should ensure that teacher has some knowledge of the skill level of participants
by the end of the first lesson and future workshops are twig according. Where a tutor feels an individual needs additional
support or shorten lessons they should seek the direction of the project
manager.
Our
2015 program has been re structured to respond to the needs of the group rather
than asking them to fit in to a program.
Salisbury road property allows artists to find their own space to rest,
gather their thoughts or to work independently.
Please allow for this flexibility.
If needed, we can arrange for individuals lessons to enable slower
artists to catch up.
Expectations
Sometimes people in particular those with disabilities will only give what is expected of them. So be aware of not setting the bar too low. As a mentor your role is to produce the best work possible for the individual. Expectation to bring everyone to same level creates potential for problems. A good tutor over four weeks should be able to adapt lessons to the level of the artists.
Pay Rates:
We
pay award rates to professional art-teachers and artists. We asked that all staff have memberships which at least one professional arts body.
· $70 per hour for teaching workshops
· $70 per hour for
catch up lessons
· 100 per hour for individual coaching sessions
No invoices will be processed prior to workshops and only completed teacher hours will be paid. Art supplies however can be reimbursed prior to workshops
Art Supplies
ArtISability program covers the cost of art supplies used in lesson preparation and by the artists in both workshops and onsite mentor sessions (professional services such a glazing and firing are included).
Art
supplies for individual one on one lessons after the completion of the
foundation stones program are at artists own expense even when ArtISability is
covering tuition fees.
Cost
of art supplies and budget blow outs continue to be an issue. Under estimating costs is common please add a
20% buffer to all quotes. Any unused consumable
art supplies purchased or reimbursed by ArtISability are the property of ArtISability
and can be used at the next program. Please
return unused items at the completion of the workshop series.
Submission of lesson plans
A
submission of lesson plans prior to the commencement of each program will be
required to assist with outcome measurements.
When workshops need to be adjusted to the skill level of the group or
individual amendments to lesson plans or other reasonable documentation is
required.
Other Allowances:
Failure to meet standards set for 2015 may result in future contracts not being offered.
