We are not a disability support service and we do not desire to become on. We are a passionate group of local visual artists with and without disabilities who want to support artists (where we can) to participate in their local arts community by removing some barriers that artists with disabilities face. Such as no funding to pay a support worker to assist them in skills development or an inability to access technology to complete equally with other artists.
We are striving to create a program artists want to partispate in and thus invite community engagement especially around writing grant submissions. We do not want to offer painting workshops if everyone is hanging out to learn photography skills. No everyone is able to learn in a group environment so where an artist requires support to connect with mentors or individual lessons we are happy to assist with this.
Our current priority in Ipswich is to identify suitable accessible venues and existing classes for artist with disability with access issues. Access issues include physical, learning, lack of resources, inability to access technology, or difficulties in communing.
We see ourselves a stepping stone assisting artists to connect with other artists, disability support groups and arts organisations. Currently we are working in partnership with ALARA Queensland and we greatly appreciate the use of the well equip venues. Without their support our projects would not developed to this level and we look forward to watching the pilot program unfold together.
We particularly would love to here from support service in areas which ALARA Queensland currently does not service to explore developing and visual arts program in your area.
